Bodegues Sumarroca in conjunction with the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona started an experimental study three years ago on 360 varieties of “vitis” from all over the world. The study follows two lines: DNA identification to start a genetic database in order to differentiate each variety from one another. Microvinify each one of the varieties to select the ones which may offer a higher quality potential.Until recently, the only way of differentiating the different grape varieties was by ampelography, which meant the examination of the leaves, the sprouts and the bunch describing every detail as much as possible in order to tell the “vitis” varieties apart. The disadvantage with this method was that it required a very thorough study of each of the varieties, which in many cases lead to certain confusion. However, DNA identification differentiates each variety accurately. Each Vitis has a uniquely defined DNA. This database may be shared with other being carried out at other worldwide research centres. This is a way to avoid synonymies, that is, there may be some synonymies on some experimental plots (the same variety but with different names according to the region they come from.
